Aida shines brightly at the Arena di Verona
[ Autor Adrian Trasca ] The Arena di Verona is also presenting a modern version of Aida, in addition to the old but wonderful version from 1913. And it looks something like this!
The stage is tilted, and the floor is made of glass. In the center, a giant hand, about ten meters high, that sometimes moves.
On the stage, dozens of Egyptians are holding spears with their hands stuck in them. They are in black, have red gloves and shoes. Radames is in a strange costume, gray from the chest down, white above, fabric like a nightgown. Amneris, in black, including the kerchief on her head. Aida, in white.
The people in black are grouped on the sides. The Egyptian army comes from the right, each soldier holding a spear in his hand. The priests are in white, each area of the stage has its own color, given by the clothing of those there. On the right are some dark gray machines, similar to tanks.
The Temple of Isis, the investiture of Radames as the leading general of the Egyptian army. Fingers from the giant hand move. A silver sphere appears from behind the stage! It is raised, and rays of light beat towards it, giving the impression that they support it from all sides.
Amneris`s room. Many on stage, the Arena does not spare people. Like Amneris, most are dressed in long dark red robes, sprinkled with rare glitter. The little black ones are... big and many! About 10 on the left, about 10 on the right, another dozen in red in the center!
Aida contrasts with the others, being in dark green. Red rays shoot from behind the giant hand.
The triumphal march. Unique! Hard to describe! A must-see! A shower of rays of light and sparkling silver costumes. Radames, black robe, long, over it has a slightly sparkling silver vest.
"Entrate i prigioneri! " - "Let the prisoners enter! "
The prisoners enter the stage... from the floor! They have cream or brown skin-colored suits. They crawl on the stage.
"Che veggo? Egli? Mio padre! " - "What do I see! He? My father! "
Amonasro is in black, has gray hair, he is clearly more solid than the other Ethiopians. The prisoners form a small pyramid around him.
"Glorie all`Egitto e Iside! "
"Glory to Egypt and the goddess Isis! "
Act Three, the Nile in Verona. Dozens of extras in white, holding 3-meter white neon lights in their hands, grouped in 2 or 3 or 30, make various shapes with the help of lights. Green rays projected towards the sky from behind the stage.
"O, patria mia! "
"Ciel, mio padre! " - "Heaven! My father! "
Amonasro comes among the crowds of people and spears. The green rays disappear. Aida and Amonasro are left alone in a white and green mist.
"Come Egyptian cohorts and destroy our country! "
Dozens of people in black emerge from the floor and form a pyramid of bodies around Amonasro.
The Moon appears behind the stage! Aida suggests to Radames that they run away.
My Aida: "Daddy, why are the people in black falling to the floor?"
"Because her idea was bad, they had no chance in her country! "
"Le gole di Napata! "
"Traditoor! "
Dozens of people in black run noisily off the stage.
"Sacerdooote, io resto a te! " - "Priest, I surrender to you! "
Many people in black surround Radames.
Amneris, in black, repents and begs Radames. He is brought into the midst of the men in black, who move away from him and reveal... a rope from each one with which they are keeping Radames tied. The prisoner is raised on a mini-stage 2-3 meters above the base of the stage, and the ropes are better visible and, together, create the impression of a pyramid!
When Radames says that he fears Amneris` mercy more, he is brought down (the small stage lowered), but the men in black are also collapsed on the floor.
The trial is... Arena di Verona type, that is, huge. On each side of the stage there are 20-30 priests spread among several large pyramids. In white cloaks with black from shoulder level up. Two rows of men in black holding orange lights in their hands climb the stones behind the stage.
Act Four. A glass pyramid is raised 3 meters high. Inside it is Aida. Radames comes under the pyramid.
"You? In questa tooommbaa?"
"You? In this tomb?"
From the edges of the stage, not very bright lights shoot out. They meet above the Arena. It looks like an upside-down fan. ;-) I analyze it and see that, yes, she is right! :-)
Aida comes out of the pyramid and comes to Radames. The silver sphere, which looks like a giant shiny silver ball, walks over the giant fingers.
"Il nostro inno di moorte! "
"A noi si schiude il cel! "
"O, Terra-addio, addio vale di pianti! "
"Our anthem of death! "
"For us the sky opens! "
"O, Terra, farewell! Farewell vale of weeping! "
Aida and Radames go into the pyramid. The giant hand covers them. |
