“La boheme” at Arena di Verona
[ Autor Adrian Trasca ] Arena di Verona. We arrive. We park. We get off. We take a few pictures with the Arena in the background, then... a heavy rain starts! We take shelter under a tree. :-) I don`t think the show is happening anymore, but we can`t leave either, so we just sit there. After a while, the rain stops, we enter the Arena, we sit down, we wait, ... the lady comes and beats the gong announcing that there`s little time left and the show starts... but more drops appear! Did the gong beat in vain?
The rain stops again (actually, the drops). A few people enter the stage, the audience applauds. At 10:00 PM the gong beats again! At 10:12 PM the orchestra enters. We see the show!
The lights go out. The conductor comes. The audience applauds enthusiastically. It begins!
Scenery: in the back, a huge, tilted canvas with a building (a block of flats) in Paris. Three large street lamps in front of her. (Real ones, not painted on canvas.) In front of the stage, a large room, as is typical of the Arena di Verona, with many windows and... a floor. There`s Mimi!
On the left and right are two large, gray things that look like the tops of steam locomotives! The costumes are classic for "Boheme". Rudolfo, in a grenadine, Mimi, in a white shirt, a long navy blue skirt. On the sides of the stage, a few more large paintings, with landscapes.
Mimi, upstairs, is doing her work. Now she`s coming down. She enters, and after the initial dialogue with Rudolfo, they curl up on the floor.
Mimi blows out her candle, Rudolfo his. "Che gelida manina! " Vittoooorie! I heard Vittorio sing "Che gelida manina! " at the Arena di Verona! Followed by "Mi chiamano Mimi! ", but not sung by him. :-)
"O suave fanciula! " and the end of the first act. We don`t get our money back if it rains! :-) At the Arena, if the first act is held and then it starts to rain and the show doesn`t resume, the money on the tickets is not returned. But I didn`t want the money, I wanted the show to continue...
Intermission, the instruments are covered to be protected in case it rains. Act two, the boys` room has "split" in two down the middle, and the two halves have moved one to the left, the other to the right of the stage. There are many people in the middle. Musetta dazzles with a dark yellow dress. The parade begins with two French flags.
Act three. Snow on the stage. Let it not rain, or it will turn into a slope. There are two fires on the sides of the stage.
The last intermission. Then Mimi and Musetta arrive. Mimi falls to the ground, Musetta calls the boys. They bring her into the room and put her on the bed.
Finally. It`s past 2 am! |
