Aniversary “La Traviata� at Ruse Opera House

The opening of the Ruse Opera House took place on November 27, 1949, with a performance of La Traviata. The decision to present “La Traviataâ€� as the first opera production of the newly established Ruse Opera was not a random choice. It reflected the determined resolve of local enthusiasts to give the young theater a firmly pro-European direction. Their ambition to create a truly European opera company was clearly expressed in the program brochure accompanying the premiere. The first performance of the Ruse Opera was on November 8, 1949, and it marked the start of the company’s repertoire. La Traviata was staged by Professor Dragan KÑŠÑ€dzhiev, with conductor Konstantin Iliev. The cast included prominent artists such as Brilyanta Kevorkyan (Violetta), Kiril Zahariev, and Stefan Georgiev-Hernani. The official opening of the Ruse Opera took place on November 27, 1949, which is considered the birth date of the theater. The performance was a success, and the audience was deeply moved by the energy and dedication of the cast. As recalled by Brilyanta Kevorkyan, the premiere was not just an ordinary performance, but a moment of creative inspiration, where the performers sought recognition not by pity, but by merit. The Ruse Opera`s birth was not just the result of artistic effort, but also a reflection of a cultural vision rooted in the traditions of the local community. Today, the Ruse Opera continues to honor its founders’ dreams and aspirations, maintaining its position as an important cultural institution for the city and Bulgaria.
