Theater Bonn celebrates 60th anniversary of the opera house
Over 1, 000 guests, a colorful gala and lively conversations late into the evening: On Monday, May 5, 2025, the Bonn Opera House celebrated under the motto "Always. Always. Toujours. Theater." - its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1965 in the Bonn Republic and acclaimed in the 1980s as "Scala am Rhein", today the house has established itself as a theater for everyone: open, diverse, international. 26 nations work together here on productions that unite people and set artistic standards.
The evening was opened on the foyer stage by General Director Dr. Bernhard Helmich and Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal and European Affairs, International Affairs and Media of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. In his welcoming address, Liminski emphasized, among other things, the importance of the opera house as a nationwide cultural center: "Thanks to the work of the Bonn Opera, we can say that Bonn also offers cultural added value for the whole of Germany." The opera house, which is located directly on the Rhine, is also "still a piece of home" for him, said the Bonn native.
From 7.30 pm, over 1, 000 invited guests from the worlds of culture, politics and business, as well as (former) employees and interested subscribers, enjoyed a festive and entertaining gala hosted by TV star Hanno Friedrich. The opera was extremely colorful and diverse. Special highlights of the show: a backyard opera with a garbage truck, two songs from SPRING AWAKENING, the current co-production with Junges Theater Bonn and a gymnastics routine with a clear message. Thorsten Kutschke, publisher of OPERNWELT magazine, awarded the opera choir the prize in the "Performance of the Year" category of the "Opernwelt" critics` survey as part of the ceremony on behalf of the entire production of "Moses und Aron". Also on stage that evening were soloists from the opera ensemble, the children`s and youth choir and members of the acting ensemble - over 100 artists in total. The Beethoven Orchestra Bonn played under the direction of General Music Director Dirk Kaftan.
Katja Dörner gave the keynote speech. "Opera is part of the colorful, lively diversity here in Bonn and is one of the leading musical theaters in NRW. General Director Dr. Bernhard Helmich and his team navigate the music theater resolutely through the times and convey an important message: opera offers something for everyone - from children to senior citizens. In order to continue this success story, we are now launching the `Future Agenda Bonn Stages` process, which is characterized by the cooperation of the players, with which we are creating stable structures for a lively, enriching and stimulating culture in Bonn, " said the Mayor of Bonn.
Overall, this anniversary is not just about the past, but is also clearly looking to the future. With its motto "Always. Always. Toujours. Theater.", the theater ties in with Bonn`s four-part motto "Joy. Joy. Joie. Bonn." - and makes it clear: we are part of this city. Theater has always been made here - and there will always be theater in the future: on stage, in the foyer, in public spaces. The theater sees itself as a meeting place, a stage for social issues and a cultural center on the Rhine.
Especially in times when the value of public cultural venues is being renegotiated, the opera house is sending out a clear signal: for the preservation, relevance and power of the theater. "Always theater" - this is not just a slogan, but an attitude. A promise to the city and its people.
Because, as Dr. Bernhard Helmich stated in his speech: "Opera in Bonn is more than just a classical opera experience. Opera is, for example, mediation. Opera is also an encounter and a community. Opera is international. Opera is also the future: in the 2024/25 season, 30, 000 people under the age of 27 visited us. Opera is a place to reflect and slow down. With all this, opera is of course also great art! " |
