Mozart’s Idomeneo returns to The London Royal Opera

This gripping operatic drama is directed by Austrian theatre and opera director Martin Kušej, well known for his striking and thought-provoking productions, and now making his UK debut. Idomeneo explores themes of personal responsibility, the horror of war and tyranny and the meaning of sacrifice. The score is considered Mozart’s first mature opera, and one of his greatest achievements. Highlights include virtuoso and tenderly lyrical arias, wonderful dramatic ensembles and fine choruses, which give the acclaimed Royal Opera Chorus an opportunity to shine. Star Mozartian Matthew Polenzani performs the towering title role, with exciting young Argentine countertenor Franco Fagioli as his son Idamante. Star sopranos Sophie Bevan and Malin Byström sing the gentle Ilia and the fiery Elettra, rivals for Idamante’s love. A wonderfully dramatic production, a superb cast and sublime music makes Idomeneo a great highlight of the 2014/15 Season.
